According to a report in Cricbuzz, the Indian Cricket Board, i.e. the BCCI, is set to restructure the central contract categories.

Central Contract: The Decision

The report states that BCCI is planning to do away with the A-plus category, the reason being that the category is for players who play all three formats, and with that pool being quite minimal, the board thinks that it is the right thing to do.

In the current central contract structure, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah are the four players whose names have been placed in the A Plus category, with Bumrah being the only all-format player.

Central Contract: The Reality

A BCCI source told Cricbuzz that the need to put the A-plus category on hold is in alignment with the realities of today’s cricketing environment, with many players picking and choosing specific formats and not to downgrade players.

According to the current central contract structure, which is divided into three categories: A plus, A, B and C, with players following under the A plus category carrying an annual retainer of 7 crore, which is 5,3 and 1 crore for categories A, B and C, respectively.

Central Contract: The Affect

One question that has been doing the rounds since the news of revised central contract categories came out is regarding Jasprit Bumrah, who is the only format player in the current setup. Will the changes affect Jasprit Bumrah’s earrings in a negative manner? The answer to which is No, Bumrah is not expected to suffer any reduction in his current earnings.
