Mumbai, which has three international cricket stadiums, is set to get another cricketing facility, a stadium that can hold up to 1,00,000 spectators.

The Plan

The project is said to be the brainchild of the present Maharashtra chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, and is envisioned as one of the largest venues to host cricket matches all around the world.

The Capacity

The proposed stadium is expected to have a seating capacity of 1,00000, which will make it the second biggest cricket ground in India after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which can hold up to 1,32,000 fans, making it the biggest cricket stadium in the world.

 The Aim

This facility is being built keeping in mind the impact it will have on sports tourism, along with giving a significant push to India’s plans to host marquee international events, thereby increasing the country’s sporting footprint at the global level.

The Progress

The infrastructure, which is set to be built in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), has been one of the key agendas of the state government, with the president of Mumbai Cricket Association, Ajinkya Naik and Vijay Singhal, managing director of CIDCO, have been engaged in detailed discussions.

Talking about the project, Ajinkya Naik said, “This initiative marks a defining moment for Maharashtra’s sporting ecosystem. A 1 lakh-capacity stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will not only elevate Mumbai cricket but also firmly position Maharashtra on the global sporting map. This world-class infrastructure will create unparalleled opportunities for player development, provide critical exposure to emerging talent, and strengthen the cricketing ecosystem across all levels.”
