The uncertainty over Bangladesh’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 has been put to rest, with the ICC reportedly having sent an email to BCB conveying its decision to bring in Scotland as the team’s replacement, according to ESPN Cricinfo.

T20 World Cup 2026: The Decision

The decision was taken by cricket’s governing body after Bangladesh refused to travel to India for the World Cup due to an alleged security threat, which, according to the ICC, wasn’t a strong enough reason to consider their request.

The ICC is understood to have sent the email on Friday after BCB communicated that the government denied them permission to travel to India for the multination tournament.

T20 World Cup: The Option

As reported by ESPN Cricinfo Bangladesh Cricket Board on Thursday communicated to the ICC taht they will take the matter to ICC’s dispute Resolution Committee (DRC), which happens to be an independent panel constituted by ICC that looks after disputes of various kinds, but it is yet to be seen on what is the basis the board will stand its ground. In addition to this, ICC’s response to Bangladesh’s demand is still not clear, according to the website.

BCB might find it difficult to challenge the decision in the DRC, as the ICC board voted with a majority to replace Bangladesh with Scotland.

T20 World Cup 2026: The Clause

According to the clause 1.3 of DRC “The Committee shall not operate as an appeal body against decisions of the ICC or any decision-making body established under the ICC’s Memorandum and Articles of Association or under any rules and regulations of the ICC, but shall operate as the sole forum and procedure for challenges to the lawfulness of such decisions, with the Committee exercising a supervisory jurisdiction.”

The highly talked about issue originated when Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur’s name was withdrawn from the 2026 IPL auction after he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders, following which Bangladesh wrote to ICC that they won’t travel to India due to security concerns and insisted on playing their matches in Sri Lanka. However, their demand was rejected by the ICC as it did not find any evidence supporting this claim.

ICC, after a meeting comprising representatives of cricket boards on Wednesday stated that “The ICC Board noted that it was not feasible to make changes so close to the tournament and that altering the schedule under the circumstances, in the absence of any credible security threat, could set a precedent that would jeopardise the sanctity of future ICC events and undermine its neutrality as a global governing body.”
