Former Indian batter Yuvraj Singh’s record of the fastest fifty by a batter of a full member nation was on the verge of being broken by his disciple Abhishek Sharma in the third T20I against New Zealand, but the letter missed it by a couple of balls.

Yuvraj scored a half-century off just 12 balls against England in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007. It was during this record-breaking innings that he smashed six sixes in an over against Stuart Broad.

Almost 19 years down the line, Abhishek Sharma, who has been coached by Yuvraj Singh, had the chance to break his mentor’s record in the third T20I against New Zealand, but the left-hander missed it by a couple of balls.

However, he did make the record of the second fastest fifty by an Indian batter in T20I cricket as he brought the milestone up in the first six overs.

Yuvraj Singh took a dig at Abhishek for failing to break his record via the social media platform X, where he wrote, “Still can’t get a 50 off 12 balls, can you? Well played – keep going strong.”

Abhishek was asked about missing out on breaking his mentor Yuvraj Singh’s record, to which he said it is very difficult to break this record, but it can be broken in this series. In the words of the current number T20I batter, “That’s more than impossible for anyone, but still, you never know. Any batsman could do it because I think all the batters have been batting really well in this series as well and going forward, it’s going to be fun.”
