The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League is entering its third week, with the season starting to produce some nail-biting, high-octane clashes in the last few weeks.
The Performance
If we talk about the most consistent teams so far in the tournament, it has to be the inaugural champions, the Rajasthan Royals, followed by the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. Both Royals and Kings are yet to lose a match, having won three and two matches out of the three games that they have played in the ten-team competition, while the Delhi Capitals lost a close contest, which they should have won by just one run, against the Gujarat Titans at their home ground.
The Trends
As far as the trends that this season has seen so far are concerned, the opening week of the tournament saw the teams winning after opting to bowl first and chasing the target set by the opposition. However, the trend lasted for the first week, and was changed come the next few days, with teams defending the dcore successfully.
The Hits
When it comes to the players that stole the limelight in the first two weeks with the bat it was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old picked up from where he had left off in the last season by scoring a breathtaking half-century in RR’s season opener against Chennai Super Kings and followed it up with a vital contribution in the shortened game against Mumbai Indians.
Like Sooryavanshi, his teammate Ravi Bishnoi starred with the ball and is currently the leading wicket-taker, which is the reason why RR find themself at the top of the points table.

The Misses
One of the players who hasn’t had the best of starts to the tournament so far is the captain of the Chennai Super Kings. Gaikwad has failed to make a meaningful contribution with the bat in the three matches that CSK has featured in thus far, which has also affected his performance as the captain of the former IPL champions.
The Issue
One of the major reasons why CSK haven’t been able to get over the line in the first three matches has been the lack of collective effort in all three departments of the game. If we take the first match into account, it was the batting unit that let the team down while the bowlers looked out of plans in the next two fixtures.
The Rigidness
As a spectator watching from outside, one gets a feeling that the Men in Yellow are being somewhat rigid in their approach, especially with the ball, which is evident by the way the CSK bowlers bowled against defending champions RCB in the last five overs, where they conceded close to 100 runs.
Several experts pointed out that the CSK bowlers lacked Plan B when the pair of Tim David and Rajat Patidar were taking them to the cleaners as they stuck to bowling wide yorkers, a strategy which backfired badly and the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team gave away 30-40 runs more than what could have been a chasable score.
Deja Vu
CSK have a history of sticking to their plans even if they end up on the wrong side of the result, which was visible with the bat last season, which resulted in them having to make some mid-season hiring, as their approach of banking on experienced players didn’t reap expected rewards.
The Overhaul
Come the 2026 IPL auction, CSK decided to stack their batting lineup with a number of young batters and retained India’s U19 World Cup-winning captain Ayush Mhatre in a bid to attack from the first ball, something which Mhatre successfully did last season.
CSK also signed Sarfaran Khan, Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer to form a young batting lineup with the experience of Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shivam Dube.
The batters have been able to do their job after a blip in the first match, and it is the bowlers who have let the team down. The likes of Anshul Kamboj, Matt Henry, and Noor Ahmad will look to make a strong comeback in the next match by being flexible in their plans.
