T20 World Cup: Rickelton Added to South Africa’s SquadImage Credit: X

South Africa has been rocked by a couple of injuries before the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, with batter Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira ruled out of the multiteam tournament scheduled to begin from February.

T20 World Cup: The Call Up

South African selectors have added Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs to the squad as the duo’s replacement, and might have to make some more.

The reason being the injury to senior players David Miller and Lungi Ngidi during the knockout stage of the ongoing edition of the SA20.

Miller picked up an injury during his team, Paarl Royals’ game against the Joburg Super Kings in Paarl, while Ngidi left the field being heavily strapped after bowling half an over during Pretoria Capitals’ game against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in qualifier one.

T20 World Cup: The Injury

Although Ngidi is expected to recover in time for the upcoming tournament, Miller’s groin injury might take time to heal, given that he is 36 years old and not a young man anymore

The injury might make Miller sit out of Parl Royals’ eliminator against the Joburg Super Kings in Centurion

The seriousness of Miller’s injury can be assessed from the fact that the Paarl Royals have called up two players as cover for Thursday’s game.

In addition to the injury to Miller and Ngidi, Dewald Brevis also injured his finger during his knock of 75 runs off 38 balls to take Pretoria Capital to the final.

T20 World Cup: The Concern

However, Brevis and Ngidi are predicted to get fit in time for the showpiece event. The selectors would be sweating over Miller’s fitness, given that groin injuries usually take time to heal properly and would hope for the left-hander to recover in time, as he brings much-needed experience to an otherwise young batting lineup taht South Africa possesses.

T20 World Cup: The Opportunity

If Miller is not able to gain full fitness, selectors might rope in Rubin Herman, who has had an impressive outing in SA20 so far.
